I am a girl and I love sports- all sports. I play them, I can talk about them, I live for them! Many people believe that dancing and shopping are “girly” and basketball and baseball are “manly”, but I 100% disagree with this. Men and women are created equal and should therefore be able to do whatever they desire with the support from others.
With this being said, there are still a limited number of women broadcastors in the world. Why? The answer is simple, girls are stereotyped as being uneducated on topics concerning sports. Women can, and in many cases are, just as knowledgeable as men when it comes to sports. Yet, when a woman broadcaster appears on, lets say, ESPN many people believe she is not as credible as a man would be to report on the given topic. For example, Erin Andrews is a very talented female broadcaster and she gets a lot of airtime on ESPN. In my opinion she deserves the airtime she gets. But, because she is a woman, she has to work even harder to be where she is.
All of this causes me to ask: was Abraham Lincoln’s quote “All men are created equal” pertaining to just men? I don’t think so. Not only are all men created equal, but all people are created equal. Therefore they should be treated with respect in the sports world as well! Personally, when there is a women broadcastor on ESPN, it catches my attention. I don’t know if this is becasue I am a girl, or if it’s just the fact that there are so few, regardless, when one is speaking I tune in.
Sports aren’t just for guys anymore, infact…guys, move over!! Girls sports have become huge! Over the past 20 years, girls sports have become just as intense, demanding, and competive as boys. Some males may be stronger and faster than females, but that doesn’t mean we don’t work every bit as hard, or that we aren’t just as deserving of the credit.
We are the future, I am the future. My job is to take action, inform the world on these facts, and prepare for change. I know that women will be accepted in the sports world, and there will be just as many men as women broadcasters someday. The change starts with us though. For the men out there- your job is to be supportive and give women a chance, listen to what they have to say and decide for yourself if they provide the right information. I guarentee you they will give you the same credible information as the men. And for the women and girls of the world, we just have to be confident that we can make this change, and stick up for what we know is right!
